Population and Human Diversity
Why nine-tenths of the world's people live on a tenth of its land, the demographic transition model's four stages, and Malthus's actual argument, not the caricature of it.

Population geography asks two separate questions that are easy to blur together: where do people actually live, and why does a population grow or stop growing the way it does. GC Leong's chapter treats both, and UPSC's own questions in this space are almost always precise, statement-based tests of a named model or theory rather than general awareness of population facts, so the mechanism behind each idea matters more than the headline number.
World population distribution: concentrated, not even
The world's population is spread with striking unevenness. Roughly nine-tenths of humanity lives on well under a tenth of the Earth's land area, and this concentration is not random: it tracks a handful of physical and human factors closely enough that a map of population density is, in effect, a map of habitability plus economic opportunity layered together.
Physical factors set the outer limits of where dense settlement is possible at all. Climate is the single strongest constraint: the harsh cold of the polar regions and the extreme heat and aridity of the tropical deserts (the Sahara, the Arabian interior, central Australia) support only sparse, scattered populations, while temperate and monsoon climates with reliable rainfall and a workable growing season support the world's densest clusters. Relief reinforces this: high, rugged mountain terrain (the Himalaya, the Andes, the Tibetan plateau) is thinly peopled because it offers little flat, cultivable land and difficult access, while river plains and coastal lowlands, the Ganga plain, the North China Plain, the Nile valley, concentrate population precisely because they combine flat land, fertile alluvial soil and easy water access. Soil fertility and the availability of fresh water reinforce the same pattern at a finer scale, which is exactly why river valleys stand out as dense population bands even within otherwise sparsely settled regions.
Economic and historical factors layer on top of this physical base and explain the sharpest concentrations of all. Industrialisation and urbanisation draw population toward manufacturing and service centres regardless of the underlying physical geography, which is why regions with only middling natural advantages, such as north-western Europe or Japan's Pacific coast, carry some of the highest population densities on Earth once the built economy is accounted for. A long, continuous history of settlement and cultivation, as in the Ganga plain or the lower Yangtze basin, has a similar cumulative effect: population has had millennia to build up wherever agriculture and civilisation took root earliest and stayed most stable. Mineral and energy resources can produce dense population clusters even in otherwise unfavourable terrain, such as mining and industrial belts in an otherwise sparsely settled interior. The three broad zones of maximum concentration that fall out of this combination of factors are East Asia (the North China Plain and the lower Yangtze), South Asia (the Indo-Gangetic plain), and North-Western Europe, each combining fertile lowland or coastal terrain with a long agricultural or industrial history.
Theories of population growth
Malthusian theory, set out by Thomas Malthus in his 1798 Essay on the Principle of Population, is worth stating precisely rather than as the loose "overpopulation is bad" summary it is often reduced to, since UPSC tests the actual argument. Malthus's claim was that population, if unchecked, grows geometrically (1, 2, 4, 8, 16...), while the food supply that must sustain it can grow only arithmetically (1, 2, 3, 4, 5...), so population will always tend to outrun the food available to feed it unless something intervenes. Malthus identified two categories of check that bring population back into balance with food supply: preventive checks, deliberate human restraint that lowers the birth rate, chiefly moral restraint such as delaying marriage, and positive checks, the involuntary raising of the death rate through famine, disease and war, which Malthus regarded as nature's own, harsher corrective whenever preventive checks failed to operate. The theory has been widely criticised since, most directly by the fact that the Green Revolution and other agricultural technology have repeatedly allowed food production to grow far faster than Malthus's arithmetic progression would predict, but the theory itself, and its own internal logic of geometric versus arithmetic growth and the two check categories, is what an exam question tests, not whether Malthus turned out to be right.
The demographic transition model describes how a population's birth rate and death rate change together as a country develops economically, and it is conventionally set out in four stages. Stage 1, high stationary, has both birth and death rates high, so natural population growth is low and roughly stable, the pattern of a pre-industrial society where disease, poor nutrition and limited medical care keep mortality high even though birth rates are also high. Stage 2, early expanding, is where death rates fall sharply, driven by improving nutrition, sanitation and basic medical care, while birth rates remain high out of social habit and lag, so this stage sees the fastest population growth in the whole model, the classic pattern of a country early in its economic development. Stage 3, late expanding, is where birth rates finally begin falling too, as urbanisation, education, and the changing economic role of children (a cost rather than a source of farm labour) reduce the incentive for large families, while death rates continue falling more slowly; population growth continues but at a decelerating rate. Stage 4, low stationary, has both birth and death rates low, so population growth slows to near zero or stabilises, the pattern of a mature, developed economy; some versions of the model add a further stage where the birth rate falls below the death rate and population begins an outright decline, which several developed economies are experiencing today. The exam-relevant point of the whole model is the sequencing: it is the death rate that falls first, opening the gap that drives the fastest growth in Stage 2, and the birth rate that falls later and closes that gap again in Stage 3, never the reverse order.
Human diversity: race, language and religion
GC Leong's own treatment of human diversity groups humanity by three largely independent classification systems, and the exam-relevant point is precisely that they are independent: a shared race does not imply a shared language or religion, and the three maps of the world drawn by each system look markedly different from one another.
Racial classification, in the older, purely descriptive geographic sense this chapter uses, based on inherited physical traits such as skin colour, hair type and facial features rather than genetics, traditionally grouped humanity into three broad categories: the Caucasoid (Europoid), historically associated with Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and South Asia; the Mongoloid, associated with East Asia, Southeast Asia, and the indigenous peoples of the Americas; and the Negroid, associated with Sub-Saharan Africa. Modern anthropology and genetics have moved well past this scheme as a meaningful biological classification, since the physical traits it relies on vary continuously rather than in the discrete clusters the old categories assume, but the terminology still appears in the geography syllabus this chapter is drawn from, as a historical description of population distribution rather than a genetic claim.
Linguistic classification groups people by the language family they speak, and does not track racial classification at all: the Indo-European family, the world's most widely spoken, spans populations of markedly different racial classification across Europe and South Asia alike, since it spread through migration and conquest rather than through any biological lineage. Other major families include Sino-Tibetan (Mandarin Chinese and related languages), Afro-Asiatic (Arabic, Hebrew and the Semitic and Berber languages of North Africa and the Middle East), and Niger-Congo (most Sub-Saharan African languages). Religious distribution is the third, again largely independent, map: Christianity and Islam are the two most widely spread religions globally, each present on every inhabited continent, while Hinduism and Buddhism, by contrast, remain far more geographically concentrated in and around South and East Asia, a genuine point of contrast worth holding onto precisely because it cuts against the assumption that a religion's global prominence and its geographic spread track each other closely.
