Why the coniferous taiga, not the equatorial rainforest, is the world's real commercial timber belt, and why Russia's forest area does not translate into leading softwood output.

World forestry splits sharply along the same equatorial-versus-temperate line that runs through several other chapters in this cluster, and the exam-relevant point is that commercial logging concentrates where the trees are easiest to exploit profitably, not simply where forest cover is densest or most extensive.
Equatorial rainforest: vast, but commercially difficult
The equatorial rainforests of the Amazon, the Congo basin and South-East Asia hold an enormous variety of hardwood species (mahogany, ebony, rosewood among the commercially named examples), but the forest's own structure works against easy commercial exploitation: an immense number of different species grow mixed together, rather than large stands of a single species, so a logging operation typically has to search out and selectively fell scattered individual trees rather than clear-cut a uniform stand, driving up cost per tree extracted. The region's own poor transport infrastructure and the density of the forest itself further limit how much timber actually reaches an export market relative to the sheer scale of forest cover, which is why equatorial hardwood logging, though locally and environmentally significant, does not dominate the world timber trade by volume the way its share of world forest cover might suggest.
Coniferous forest (taiga): the real commercial timber belt
The coniferous forest belt, the taiga, spans a broad band across the high-latitude Northern Hemisphere, Russia's Siberia, Canada and the northern United States, and Scandinavia, and it is structured in exactly the opposite way to the rainforest: it consists overwhelmingly of just a handful of softwood species (pine, spruce, fir), growing in large, uniform stands. This uniformity makes mechanised clear-felling straightforward and cheap per tree extracted, and softwood itself is well suited to the two industries that consume the bulk of world timber, construction lumber and pulp and paper, since softwood fibres are long and ideal for both. This combination of easy mechanised extraction and strong demand from two major industries is exactly why the taiga, not the equatorial rainforest, is the world's dominant commercial timber-producing belt despite holding far fewer tree species overall.
Russia holds by far the largest forest area of any country in the world, roughly seventy percent larger than second-placed Brazil, and its own share of the taiga belt across Siberia is the geographic reason for that. But forest area alone does not translate directly into leading production, the same distinction that recurs across nearly every commodity in this cluster: on coniferous (softwood) industrial roundwood specifically, the United States leads world production today, with Russia a clear second and Canada third, reflecting the United States' own well-developed logging and processing infrastructure relative to the sheer scale of Russia's forest. On non-coniferous (hardwood) roundwood, the ranking flips toward the equatorial and subtropical producers instead, led by China, Brazil and Indonesia.
