World Agriculture, Resources and Trade already names rubber and oil palm among the standard plantation-crop list, with rubber's British-colonial spread into Malaysia given as a named example. This note does not repeat that colonial framing; it covers the physical requirements and current world production leaders for the industrial (non-food, or food-and-fuel) crop group this chapter covers: rubber, the major oilseeds, and tobacco.

Natural rubber

Rubber needs continuously hot, humid, equatorial conditions with year-round rainfall and no real dry season, the same narrow climate band that supports tropical rainforest, since the rubber tree (originally native to the Amazon basin) cannot tolerate frost or a pronounced dry spell. Commercial cultivation, however, is overwhelmingly a South-East Asian activity today rather than a South American one, the result of rubber seedlings being deliberately transplanted out of Brazil to British and Dutch colonial plantations in Asia in the late nineteenth century, where they escaped the leaf blight that has kept Amazonian rubber cultivation commercially marginal ever since. Thailand is the world's leading producer today, accounting for roughly a third of world output, with Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia the other major South-East Asian producers; together, these four countries supply most of the world's natural rubber. Malaysia, the original centre of British colonial rubber planting named in the plantation-agriculture chapter, has since been overtaken in sheer output by its neighbours as production shifted with land availability and labour cost, even though it remains historically the crop's best-known colonial example.

Oilseeds: palm oil, soybean and groundnut

Oil palm, like rubber, needs constant equatorial heat and humidity, and its cultivation is even more geographically concentrated than rubber's: Indonesia and Malaysia together supply over four-fifths of the world's palm oil, with Indonesia alone now producing more than twice Malaysia's output. This extreme concentration in just two neighbouring countries is a recurring theme across this chapter's crops and is itself a useful, testable fact distinct from palm oil's well-known environmental controversy around tropical deforestation.

Soybean needs a warm temperate to subtropical climate with a frost-free growing season of around four to five months, and its geography is centred on the temperate Americas rather than the tropics. Brazil is the world's largest producer today, having overtaken the United States over the past two decades on the back of large-scale expansion into its own interior savanna (the Cerrado), with the United States a close second and Argentina a clear third; together these three countries account for the large majority of world output, feeding a global trade in soybean chiefly destined for animal feed and vegetable oil rather than direct human consumption.

Groundnut (peanut) tolerates a wider range of conditions than palm oil or rubber, needing a warm growing season and light, well-drained sandy soil, and its production centres on Asia rather than the Americas: China is the largest producer, followed by India, with Nigeria the leading African producer and, within India, Gujarat the single largest producing state.

Tobacco

Tobacco tolerates a wide range of climates, from temperate to tropical, provided the growing season is frost-free and long enough, and it is grown as a genuine cash crop wherever local demand or export markets make it profitable rather than being confined to one narrow climate band the way rubber or oil palm are. China is by a wide margin the world's largest producer, its output alone exceeding the next several largest producers combined, driven by its own enormous domestic market; India, Brazil and Zimbabwe follow at real distance behind it, with Brazil historically the more export-oriented of the major producers.
