Cereals, Vegetables and Fruits
Rice, wheat and maize each need a different climate and dominate a different set of countries, plus where China's vegetable dominance and the world's citrus belts sit.

World Agriculture, Resources and Trade already covers how the world's farming systems sort by type, subsistence, commercial grain, plantation, ranching, and which regions practise each. This note covers a different axis of the same syllabus: the world's three staple cereals by name, the specific climate and soil each one needs and the countries that actually grow the most of it, plus the headline facts on world vegetable and fruit geography.
The three world cereals: different crops, different climates
Rice needs the most exacting physical conditions of the three staples: high temperatures throughout the growing period (generally above 20°C), abundant water, either from heavy monsoon rainfall or controlled irrigation, and flat or terraced, water-retentive clay soil, since the crop is typically grown standing in flooded paddy fields for most of its cycle. This combination confines intensive rice cultivation almost entirely to South, South-East and East Asia's river valleys, deltas and coastal plains, where labour is abundant enough to manage the transplanting and water control the crop demands. By recent FAO-tracked output, India and China are comfortably the two largest producers, with a large gap down to Bangladesh, Indonesia and Vietnam; because rice is grown so intensively for direct human consumption within the same densely populated region that grows it, a comparatively small share of world output ever enters international trade, and the largest exporters (India and Thailand, among others) are not simply the largest producers in the same order.
Wheat, by contrast, is the defining crop of the temperate mid-latitudes, tolerating a shorter growing season, cooler temperatures, and markedly less rainfall than rice; it is sown as either a winter crop (planted in autumn, harvested the following summer, in regions with mild winters) or a spring crop (planted and harvested within a single warmer season, in regions where winters are too severe to sow before them). Wheat is also the cereal World Agriculture, Resources and Trade already names as the defining crop of the world's extensive commercial grain-farming belts, the Prairies, the Pampas, the steppes and the rest, precisely because it suits large-scale, mechanised cultivation on land too dry or too far from a coast for more intensive crops. China and India are the two largest producers by volume today, but because both consume most of what they grow domestically, the countries with genuine exportable surplus, Russia, the United States, Canada and Australia among them, carry the greater weight in world wheat trade.
Maize (corn) needs warm summer temperatures and moderate, well-distributed rainfall, and it is grown across a wider range of latitudes and purposes than either rice or wheat, since a large share of world maize output is grown for animal feed and industrial uses (including ethanol) rather than direct human consumption. The United States' Corn Belt, across the American Midwest, is easily the largest single source of world maize, followed at real distance by China and then Brazil, with Argentina and India further behind; this concentration in the temperate Americas, rather than Asia, is itself a useful contrast to hold against rice and wheat's more Asia-centred geography.
Reading the trap: production leader versus export leader
The single most exam-relevant pattern across all three cereals is the same one World Agriculture, Resources and Trade already flags for petroleum reserves versus production: the country that grows the most of a crop is not necessarily the country that supplies world trade in it. China and India lead world rice and wheat production by sheer scale of domestic consumption, not necessarily by surplus available to export, so a question asking which country is the leading exporter of rice or wheat can have a different correct answer from one asking which country is the leading producer, and the two questions should never be treated as interchangeable.
Vegetables and fruits
World vegetable production is dominated overwhelmingly by China, whose output of vegetables (a broad category spanning everything from cabbages to tomatoes to root vegetables) exceeds that of the rest of the world's next several largest producers combined, driven by its huge domestic market and intensive market-gardening style cultivation near its own cities, the same truck-farming and horticulture pattern World Agriculture, Resources and Trade already describes for north-western Europe and the north-eastern United States, but at a far larger scale.
World fruit geography splits along climate lines the same way the crop systems already covered do. Citrus fruits (oranges, lemons, grapefruit) are concentrated in warm subtropical and Mediterranean-climate belts, with Brazil and the United States (chiefly Florida and California) historically the largest orange producers, alongside the Mediterranean basin itself, the same five-region Mediterranean-climate belt (the Mediterranean basin, southern California, central Chile, South Africa's south-western Cape, and south and south-western Australia) already named for viticulture and olives. Bananas, by contrast, are a genuinely tropical crop, grown across Latin America (Ecuador, Costa Rica, Guatemala), South and South-East Asia, and parts of Africa, and remain one of the standard named plantation crops alongside tea, rubber and sugarcane. Apples need a temperate climate with a distinct winter chilling period, which is why, within India, apple cultivation is confined largely to Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh's hill districts rather than the plains.
